Summer. The sun describes a lengthy arc high across the sky, bringing more daylight hours in which to do more great things.
I surge ever onward, relentless in my pursuit of fun, frivolity and connection to the world around me. Take one example, my current foray into acting for the first time in my lengthy performance career. In February I attended auditions for the Highlands Summer Festival, the long-running annual theatre presentation in Haliburton. I went for a look-in at what an acting audition is like. Curiosity, mostly.
I read for the Professor role in “Educating Rita”. It might, I thought, be a place where I could summon up my father’s persona for the role. Fate and certain directors had other plans for me. I am now one fourth of the cast in a very funny comedy called “Looking” by Norm Foster. After months of weekend rehearsals with a great cast and director our debut show was last night. A hair-raising thrill ride it was for me and the hometown crowd was very kind in their assessment of my performance.
I get eight nights of this treat over the next two weeks, and I know I’ll be sorry when it ends. It’s too early to say whether I’m an actor, but I see now where something this fun could draw a person like a moth to a flame. If you’re able, come see.
