Ah, spring. The birds are busy making nests. The gardens have sprung to life. The patio furniture has been pulled out of storage and dusted off, and it looks like I might have to fire up the ol’ lawnmower before too long.
Until then though, the main plot of my story continues to be my album Lucky Dog. I’m so happy with the way it sounds and the response to it has been enthusiastic; people hear it, they like! Of course the challenge in the music business world, pre- or post-digital era, has always been to find ways to let people know about your music. So we’ve managed to get it out to Community radio stations all over Canada and in Australia. Several Lucky Dog tracks have been added to regular programming at many of these stations. So, listen up and support community radio.
The tour dates page is filling in nicely for this year, with a number of interesting things on the horizon. Some Coney Hatch stuff, (going to England!!!, plus other surprises); some fun solo shows for me; and gigs with the trio I have with Mark Santer and Tim Harrington are all in there. I’m booked throughout the year to monthly shows at Seneca Casino, often with Sean Kelly guesting on guitar.
Something unexpected by anyone (me included) is the onstage acting debut this July of yours truly. Back in January I auditioned for the Highlands Summer Theatre Festival in Haliburton, just to see what an acting audition was like. To my surprise, the directors liked me and asked me to be in the four-member cast of a Norm Foster play called “Looking”. I’m cast as a middle-aged morning show deejay who is one of four people “looking” for new love. What began as a lark now looks like quite hard work, actually. I’ll be relying on my capable cast-mates to carry me. Look it up on the Highlands Summer Festival link on my site and come and see me.
If you click on the Diamond Ditty logo at www.carldixon.com you’ll find a new CD listed in there in the store, namely Lost and Found by the Haliburton Pastoral Charge. This is a project I took on for my friends in the Haliburton United Church under Rev. Harry Morgan. I recorded, produced and mixed this album of 22 “songs of the faith”, as performed by a number of people from the congregation. It was a very moving and uplifting project, and all proceeds go to the Haliburton Pastoral Charge. Give it a look and a listen. Nice music by nice people, expressing their faith through song.
For those of you interested in writing song lyrics, I’m holding a one-day workshop on Saturday, August 6 at Fleming College here in Haliburton. “It’s About the Lyric!” is the title. I’ll be teaching what I’ve learned about crafting a song lyric over all these years and all these songs. Again, follow the link in the links section of my site.
March 9 was a big night for me as I delivered my inspirational speaking event, Beyond The Open Door. We did a video shoot of the presentation and it’s currently being edited for a brief “highlights version” to pursue speaking opportunities at other events. In my presentation I tell some stories of my life in rock’n’roll, describe the events around my crash and sing and play a few songs to illustrate my points. A concept that I developed and spoke about that night in conclusion is START, an acronym for Stop, Think, Accept, Renew and Thank. This came about simply from looking at the lessons which life has delivered to me in the last few years.
That’s the news up to the minute. Be sure to check in often though as we’ve always got something to tell, show or share with you. Until then, take care and enjoy your spring.
